Making a neuropathy diagnosis requires a process similar to any other illness, and involves basic physical examination, blood work, urinalysis, or possibly electrodiagnostic testing. A thorough discussion of symptoms and health factors will take place between doctor and patient. The doctor will also determine the patient's medical history by asking questions about relatives who might have similar conditions, medications the patient has taken, illnesses or accidents they have suffered, etc. If necessary, there are certain specialized procedures that may help measure damage to the nerves, such as nerve conduction velocity tests, which use a probe to stimulate the nerve so that the speed at which impulses are transmitted can be measured.
